080609_2537_5D Born This Morning at 4 AM

Something woke me up at 4:00 in the morning and I followed the sounds toward the kitchen. From the kitchen door out to the garden, I saw a doe had just given birth to a baby fawn. The activity had turned on the lighting, so I quietly watched for a while before going back to bed. A couple hours later I found the fawn nestled under the bushes in a place its mother thought to be safe. True to Nature, the mother was off to find food but was surely checking in regularly, unseen from a distance. Within a few more hours, the fawn was out exploring my lawns and gardens. I gathered the neighborhood children to come and take a look (from a safe distance so not to concern the mother who was probably watching). When the fawn nestled down to rest a bit, I was able to capture this image. The fawn then placed its head behind the tree to "hide" from all the activity and took a nap. This went on for three days with the fawn always going back to the same original bushes and the mother only coming after dark. On the fourth day, both mother and fawn were gone, off to teach and learn about life in the surrounding world of Nature.
